Friday's workshop report

Today's topic, like last week's, was also about learning English.

今日のトピックも先週に引き続き英語学習に関するトピックでした。

Being able to reschedule on Wednesdays and Fridays is convenient, and today's workshop was a bit lively.

“N-san shared his experience of his first trip abroad to Hawaii, where he felt the desire to learn English after realizing he could only greet fellow runners with simple phrases during a morning run.”

"A-san mentioned that she believes it would be fun if she could speak English better.”

"A-san shared that she studied abroad in Hawaii for a month. During this time, she had fun and talked to her niece about the joys of English, which motivated her to learn English again for her niece."

“Ak-san shared that while traveling to Tahiti, he watched Japanese movies with English subtitles and understood them well. However, he found American movies challenging to follow without Japanese subtitles. In five years, he aims to watch movies without needing Japanese subtitles, which is his English learning goal."

"Y noted that in some developing countries, children grow up watching English movies without subtitles, which helps them become proficient in English as they grow older. This differs from the experience of many Japanese people."

"A-san shared that she's watched the movie 'Hulk' with English subtitles so many times that she's memorized the lines. Despite her ability to remember phrases well, she feels sad that she still can't speak English fluently.”

"N-san, acknowledging the challenge of improving his English skills at his age, hopes to be able to understand FEN in five years."

A-san shared that when she was in elementary school, she joined an English club. Although she's not sure why she joined, she believes it was probably because she was inspired by her friends and the people around her.

A-san thinks she joined the English club in elementary school because the ALT, or Assistant Language Teacher, was a foreigner.

That's really important. My teacher also said, "Don't take notes during the lesson."

If you're busy writing down everything the teacher says or copying from the board, you can't really focus on what's being taught. Plus, you might feel satisfied just by taking notes.

So during training sessions, we were told not to take notes. It's the same with English subtitles—it's fine to use them the first time, but after that, it's better to watch without subtitles.

Otherwise, you might feel like you understand just by reading the text, which isn't helpful. I heard that building your ability to understand English in English helps you improve your skills.

When you think about English, what excites you the most?

**40:10P1**

I’m thinking about volunteering as a marathon supporter.

I’ve done a lot of running myself and know quite a bit about marathons and triathlons.

So, I’d like to share my experiences with international runners.

**42:32 F**

What do you think is the biggest difference between how you use English now and how you'd like to use it in the future?

**43:54 P2**

Let’s see... If I could speak English without hesitation when traveling abroad, it would be completely different from how I use it now.

So, I want to be able to speak English confidently.

**45:12 F**

Okay, so which country would you like to visit first?

**45:21P2”**

Korea.

**45:28 F**

But it’s not an English-speaking country, right?

**45:37 P2**

That’s true, but with the yen being so weak right now, I can’t afford to travel to English-speaking countries.

**46:08 F**

What part of learning English do you enjoy the most, and how does it motivate you to keep going?

**47:13 10541 F1**

I want to be able to make any runner from any country smile by talking to them in English.

**49:21 F**

Right, okay. Speaking English broadens your world.

**49:29 F**

I really like meeting people around the world. What kind of content, like books or movies, do you wish you could enjoy more fully in English?

**50:53 P2**

I’d like to be able to enjoy English children’s programs without subtitles.

**51:37 F:**

I see. That sounds nice. Do you enjoy watching them with your niece?

**52:29 F:**

By doing that, you’ll improve your listening skills, which will be an important part of your language input. That’s really great.

**53:36 F:**

Can you think of a specific situation where you were glad you knew English? How did that make you feel?

**53:47 10541 P1**

Like I said earlier, I want to talk to foreign runners about running.

Even just greeting them and seeing them smile makes me happy, so I want to keep studying and be able to talk with fellow runners in English.

I have an English test next week, but someday I’d also like to volunteer as an interpreter for an event in Tokyo.

**56:11 F**

What personal strengths do you bring to learning English? And how can you use them more effectively in your studies?

For me, I’m very chatty. That’s a great strength, right?

A-san, you’re a quick learner. You remember texts or lines very quickly, right? That’s one of your strengths.

**57:30 P2**

That’s true, but I can’t seem to apply it to actual conversations.

**59:46 F**

Even if English doesn’t come out easily now, what matters is persistence. Eventually, you’ll be able to speak it.

Don’t worry, just keep at it patiently.

**60:23 F**

Thank you for today’s sharing, and enjoy the rest of your day!
