「人魚の眠る家」を読んで

まぁ、最終的には一番良いエンディングだったのかなぁと思う。

私は、かつて3匹の腎臓の悪いペットに家で補液（点滴）をして2年くらい寿命を延ばしてしまった（延ばした）経験があって、それは、いまだに、あれでよかったのだろうかと思うことがある。

だから、このストーリーの中の薫子（かおるこ）の気持ちがよくわかる

人間とペットを一緒にするなと言われるかもしれないけど、私にとっては、愛する子どもたちだったので。

「脳死」の定義は、この本を読んで、本当に難しいことがわかった。それだけでも勉強になった。

脳が死ねば成長はしないし、筋肉も育たないはずだが、薫子の娘は、ちゃんと成長したし、内臓の機能も服用がいらないレベルにまで回復した。ただ自発呼吸ができないので、横隔膜に装置を埋め込んで、自発呼吸ができるようにした。

それはやり過ぎなのか？

いや、心臓の動きがイマイチな人にペースメーカーを使うのとどこが違うのだろう？

本人の意識があるかないかだろうか、意識がないというのもどこまでわかるのかは、微妙らしい。

難しい考えさせられる問題だ。いつも東野圭吾さんは　見過ごされやすい社会の問題点のを題材にする。それが東野圭吾のすごいところだ。

そうそう、最初に出てきた宗吾君とこの家族のリンクのあかし方も東野さんらしい。いい話だったわ。

他の本も読んでいるんだけど、どうしても圭吾さんの小説に気持ちがいってしまう。

そして、読み終わるとすぐ圭吾ロスになる。他の本がなかなか進まない。

🐚 “The House Where the Mermaid Sleeps” by Keigo Higashino

In the end, I think it really was the best way it could have ended.

For about two years, I gave my three pets subcutaneous fluids at home to help with their kidney problems. They lived longer because of it, but even now, I still wonder if I did the right thing.

That’s why I can completely understand how Kaoruko felt in this story. Some people might say, “Don’t compare humans to pets,” but to me, they were my beloved children.

Reading this book made me realize how complicated the concept of “brain death” really is. That alone was a valuable lesson for me.If the brain is dead, there shouldn’t be any growth or muscle development—but Kaoruko’s daughter actually grew. Her internal organs even recovered enough that she didn’t need medication anymore. The only problem was that she couldn’t breathe on her own, so they implanted a device in her diaphragm to help her breathe naturally.

Was that going too far?But then again, how is that different from giving someone a pacemaker when their heart doesn’t work properly?Maybe the difference lies in whether the person is conscious or not. But even that—how can we truly know for sure?

It’s such a deeply thought-provoking issue. Keigo Higashino always highlights social problems that are easy to overlook—that’s what makes him such an incredible writer.Oh, and the way Higashino connected Shogo and his family from the beginning of the story was so typical of him—beautifully done. It was such a good touch.

I’ve been reading his other books too, but I always end up being completely absorbed in his stories.And when I finish one, I fall into what I call “Keigo loss.” It’s hard to move on to any other book after that.
