「むかし僕が死んだ家」読了　📕

『むかし僕が死んだ家』——このタイトルだけではそれほど興味を引かれず、ずっと読んでいなかったのだけれど、読み始めたら…面白い！！！　やっぱりすごい、東野圭吾！

そして読み終えて解説を見たら、黒川博行さんのタイトルが「なんと多彩で多才な作家・東野圭吾」。うん、私も黒川さんのタイトルに一票！

実は私、この警察小説作家・黒川さんの『帰り道は遠かった』も好きで、おふたりが仲良しだと知ってなんだか嬉しくなってしまった。東野さんの“おいしくない豆腐のとろろあんかけ”を作る姿、私も見たかったなぁ（笑）

さて、『むかし僕が死んだ家』に話を戻すと、黒川さんがおっしゃるように、登場人物はほぼ二人、場所もほぼ一箇所。それなのにここまで惹きつけるのが本当にすごい。どうしたらあんなアイディアが浮かんでくるんだろう。東野さんの執筆の速さとクオリティの高さには黒川さんも脱帽しているくらいだから、私なんかもうメロメロですよ。

男女間の微妙な感情の揺れもうまく描かれていて、本当に心地よく読めた。読者としては謎を推理しながら読むわけだけど、この小説で私の推理が当たったのはチャーミーのところぐらいかな。

それにしても、家の所在地の設定とか、本当によく考えられている。現実的に考えると、施主が望めば工務店ってどんな家でも作ってくれるものなのかな？ つい夫に聞いちゃったけれど、まだ読んでいない夫には、もしかすると最大級のネタバレだったかもしれない。

とにかく、面白かったし、ちょっと切ない物語でもありました。あ、ところで、あの二人、トイレ遠いというか膀胱が強いですね。羨ましい。

I hadn’t picked up The House Where I Used to Die for a long time because the title didn’t really grab me—but once I finally read it… wow, it was so good! Higashino Keigo never fails to impress.

And when I finished and turned to the afterword, I found Hiroyuki Kurokawa’s commentary titled “What a Versatile and Multi-Talented Writer—Higashino Keigo.”I completely agree—he gets my vote too!

Actually, I’ve always liked Kurokawa-san’s work as well; his book The Way Home Was Long is one of my favorites. Knowing that he and Higashino-san are good friends made me oddly happy. I wish I could’ve seen Higashino-san making that famously “not-so-delicious” tofu with grated yam sauce. (I’d totally watch that! 😂)

Back to The House Where I Used to Die: just as Kurokawa-san points out, the story revolves around almost only two characters, and the setting is basically just one place. And yet it’s this gripping. How does he even come up with ideas like that? His writing speed and consistent quality amaze even Kurokawa-san—so of course I’m completely smitten too.

He’s also so skilled at portraying those delicate emotional shifts between a man and a woman.As readers, we naturally try to solve the mystery as we go, but honestly, the only guess I got close to was about Chaami.

And the way he worked out the house’s location—seriously clever. It made me wonder: if a client really insisted, would a construction company build a house like that in real life? I ended up asking my husband… and since he hasn’t read the book yet, I might have spoiled the biggest twist for him. Oops.

In the end, it was not just exciting but also quietly heartbreaking. A really memorable read. BTW, they have a ‘strong bladder’, I mean they don’t need to use the restroom frequently. I wish I were like that.
