『パラレルワールド・ラブストーリー』感想

1995年2月に中央公論社より刊行された、東野圭吾の『パラレルワールド・ラブストーリー』を読了した。

率直に言えば、とても面白かった。

ただし同時に、最後の章にはどうしても拭いきれない違和感が残った。

その理由を整理するため、物語を追いながら自分の気持ちを書き留めてみたい。

序章

これは素敵な始まりだった。

電車がすれ違う場面の描写が鮮やかで、冒頭から胸が高鳴る。

「良い本を選んだ」と素直に嬉しくなった。

崇史・智彦・麻由子の三人の関係性には強く惹かれる一方で、どこか危うさも感じていた。

第1章

思わず「え〜っ！？」と声が出る展開。

同時に、読者としてあれこれ推理を始めてしまう。

物語が一気に面白くなってきたと感じた。

第2章

ここで私は、物語に深く引き込まれていく。

主人公の頭がぼんやりすれば、自分まで同じ感覚になる。

記憶が曖昧になれば、読者である私の感覚まで揺らぐ。

時系列が行き来する展開は正直得意ではないが、それでも読み進めてしまう。

自分まで時空の時差ボケを起こしているようで、少し怖くなるほどだった。

第3章

このあたりから、「麻由子はどこまで知っているのだろうか」という疑問が強くなる。

読者として、つい彼女の表情や言葉を疑いながら読んでしまう。

第4章

篠崎という人物も気になり始める。

推理小説として、謎が深まっていく展開は素直に面白い。

第5章

夏江が再登場する。

私はこの人物の存在に安心感を覚えていたので、ここで再び現れてくれたことにホッとした。

崇史の立場を思えば、「混乱」するのは当然だろう。

第6章

篠崎の異変が、さらに私の頭をクラクラさせる。

テクノロジーが進歩しても、こんな実験はやはり受け入れがたい。

第7章

物語は徐々に真相へと近づいていく。

怖いと感じながらも、怖いもの見たさで読み進めてしまう、まさに小説として楽しい局面だ。

第8章

麻由子の気持ちは、わかるようでわからない。

彼女は科学者であり、同時に一人の女性でもある。

智彦・崇史・麻由子の関係性はさらに複雑さを増し、物語に深みが加わっていく。

第9章

ここで、あのチンパンジーの存在が重要な手がかりとなる。

同時に、私の中では「これは倫理的にどうなのだろう」という疑問が強くなっていった。

第10章（終章）

二人は本当に帰還できるのか。

技術は未完成だと示されている中で、崇史は決断する。

その後が描かれない結末は、読者の感性に委ねられているのだろう。

しかし私はハッピーエンドを願いながら読んでいたため、ここで物語が終わることに強いモヤモヤを感じた。

普段ホラーはほとんど読まないが、この後味はホラー作品に近いものがあるかもしれない。

倫理的な問題と理解しきれない技術設定、そして登場人物たちの行き着く先が見えない結末。

それらが重なったことで、私はこのラストを現実的なものとして受け止めることができなかった。

それでも、崇史や智彦の思いにここまで心を寄せて読んでいたからこそ、この結末が強く心に残っているのだと思う。

解説で新井素子が述べているように、東野圭吾は一体どれほど多くのストーリーアイディアを持っているのだろうか。

その多彩さ、多才さは疑いようがない。

タイトルからは想像できない展開だったが、十分に楽しませてもらった。

現在は『名探偵の掟』を読み始めているが、これがまた全く異なるタッチで驚かされている。

一人の作家の作品から、これほど幅広いテイストを味わえるのは、読者として本当にありがたい。

Review of Parallel World Love Story

I finished reading Parallel World Love Story by Keigo Higashino, first published in February 1995.

To be honest, I really enjoyed this novel.

At the same time, however, I was left with a strong sense of discomfort at the final chapter.

In order to understand why I felt that way, I would like to look back on the story and describe my feelings as they developed.

Prologue

The opening was wonderful.

The scene of two trains passing each other was vividly described, and it immediately made my heart race.

I felt happy, thinking that I had chosen a good book.

I was strongly drawn to the relationship among Takashi, Tomohiko, and Mayuko, while also sensing something fragile and dangerous beneath it.

Chapter 1

I could not help thinking, “What!?”

At the same time, I started forming various theories as a reader.

The story suddenly became much more intriguing.

Chapter 2

At this point, I found myself deeply absorbed in the story.

When the protagonist felt mentally foggy, I felt the same way.

As his memories became unclear, my own sense of reality also began to shake.

I am not very good with stories that move back and forth in time, yet I kept reading.

It felt as if I myself were suffering from a kind of time lag, which was slightly frightening.

Chapter 3

From here on, I began to wonder how much Mayuko actually knew.

As a reader, I found myself doubting her expressions and words.

Chapter 4

I also became curious about the character Shinozaki.

As a mystery novel, the way the questions deepened was genuinely enjoyable.

Chapter 5

Natsue appears again.

Because her presence gave me a sense of relief, I was glad to see her return.

Considering Takashi’s situation, his confusion felt completely natural.

Chapter 6

Shinozaki’s strange behavior made my head spin even more.

No matter how advanced technology becomes, I felt that such experiments were still unacceptable.

Chapter 7

The story gradually approaches the truth.

Although it was frightening, I kept reading out of sheer curiosity—this was one of the most exciting parts of the novel.

Chapter 8

Mayuko’s feelings were both understandable and difficult to grasp.

She is both a scientist and a woman.

The relationships among Tomohiko, Takashi, and Mayuko grow even more complex, adding depth to the story.

Chapter 9

Here, the existence of the chimpanzee becomes an important clue.

At the same time, I began to feel a strong ethical unease about what was happening.

Chapter 10 (Final Chapter)

Can the two of them truly return?

Although the technology is clearly described as incomplete, Takashi makes his decision.

Because what happens afterward is not shown, the ending is left to the reader’s imagination.

However, since I was hoping for a happy ending, I felt a deep sense of frustration when the story ended here.

I rarely read horror novels, but the aftertaste of this ending felt similar to that genre.

Ethical issues, technology I could not fully understand, and an ending where the characters’ ultimate fate remains unclear—

all of these elements combined made it difficult for me to accept the conclusion as something realistic.

Still, precisely because I had grown so emotionally attached to Takashi and Tomohiko, this ending left a strong impression on me.

As mentioned in the afterword by Motoko Arai, I cannot help wondering how many story ideas Keigo Higashino possesses.

His versatility and creativity are beyond doubt.

Although the story developed in a way I never imagined from the title, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I have already started reading The Rules of Detective Fiction, and once again I am surprised by how different its tone is.

Being able to enjoy such a wide range of styles from a single author is something I truly appreciate as a reader.
